The story
One panellist warned the room of a slight tangent, then described a moment in the life of a company that investors know well. The founder gets the backing, the panellist told the Autistic Pride Day Symposium in Sydney in June 2024, and builds the business to a certain point. Such founders often fit what the panellist called the “nutty professor stereotype”, exceptionally gifted academically and leading a business in a STEM field. They build a team up to a certain size, and then the dynamics of the team and its relationships become really complex. At that point, the panellist said, the investors start to ask whether this is the person to lead the next stage of scale up and take the business through to an exit.
The panellist was careful with the frame. The pattern applies to neurotypical founders as well, the panellist said, adding a wish to be really careful about how it was put. The panellist was describing the stage of growth at which the skills that built a venture are tested by a different kind of job.
